Sinds 2001 leidt het instrumentale duo ZOMBI de leiding voor een moderne herwaardering van progressieve en elektronische rockmuziek onder een jongere generatie. Het creëren van een kenmerkend geluid van basgitaar, drums en analoge synthesizers – en demonstreren hoe ze allemaal tegelijk kunnen worden gespeeld in de live setting – hun strakke muzikaliteit en geweldige arrangementen creëren een onmiskenbare sfeer, die fans van metal, indierock, horror soundtracks verenigt, new age en dansmuziek, met hun prog-minded broeders door het gangpad. Door de jaren heen heeft de groep zich laten inspireren door een uitgebreid assortiment aan muzikaal materiaal, variërend van soundtracks tot Krautrock legendes Neu! en Harmonia voor het baanbrekende werk van iconen als Genesis, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Van Halen en Pink Floyd, voor de snoepkleurige klanken van italo disco en de rokerige gangen van dark danse.
De groep bracht twee CD-R’s uit (een titelloze full-length en een vervolg-EP, Twilight Sentinel, beide samengesteld op de VCO-release The Zombi Anthology en afzonderlijk uitgegeven op vinyl), wat de aandacht trok van Relapse, die tekende ZOMBI in 2004. Tijdens uitgebreide tournees voor en na de release van hun eerste twee full-lengths van Relapse (2004’s Cosmos en 2006’s Surface To Air) begon ZOMBI aan nationale data samen met artiesten als The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Fucking Champs, Guapo, Isis, Trans Am, Maserati en Don Caballero. Gedurende deze tijd kreeg ZOMBI ook de opdracht om eigen originele soundtracks op te nemen, eerst voor filmmaker Adam Wingard’s debuutfilm Home Sick uit 2003, en vervolgens opnieuw voor Nick Palumbo’s ToeTag-verankerde slasher Murder-Set-Pieces (2004).
Terwijl de touractiviteit vertraagde, verbreedden ZOMBI’s muzikale horizon zich, zowel aan de extreme kanten van hun album Spirit Animal uit 2009 als in Escape Velocity uit 2011, hun meest synthesizerlijke werk tot nu toe (en mogelijk de enige Relapse-release die ooit een progressieve release bevatte) huis track). Terwijl de groep verder keek dan de methodes van door horror beïnvloede prog / synthscapes (een veld dat elk jaar steeds drukker werd met nieuwe deelnemers en fans), groeiden de ambities van Moore en Paterra ook, en de twee begonnen aan hun eigen projecten.
In 2013 kwamen alle inspanningen van ZOMBI tot bloei toen hen werd gevraagd om de inaugurele Amerikaanse tourdata voor de Italiaanse legendes Goblin te openen. Voor de eerste live ZOMBI-dates sinds 2007 haalden de twee hun spullen uit elkaar en explodeerden in actie, waardoor de geesten van alle aanwezigen werden opgewekt. Goblin verhoogde toen de ante door Moore uit te nodigen om op extra data als onderdeel van hun groep op te treden als synthspeler, en beide bands waren beiden uitgenodigd om te spelen op het Roadburn-festival van 2015. Deze instanties droegen rechtstreeks bij aan de creatie van ZOMBI’s nieuwste full-length Shape Shift. Het album is door de band zelf geproduceerd en opgenomen in Machine Age Studios in Pittsburgh en de privéstudio van Steve Moore in het centrum van New York. Moore reageerde op het nieuwe materiaal: ‘Het is een rockplaat – beschouw het als een vervolg op Surface To Air. Er zijn geen techno-jams of symfonische prog-fantasieën. Geen solo-track intermezzo’s. Het is donker en zwaar. Live drums op elk nummer en veel basgitaar. We zijn officieel overgegaan van de modus ‘studioproject’ naar de modus ‘live band’. ”

Over the years, the group has drawn inspiration from a vast assortment of musical material, ranging from soundtracks to Krautrock legends Neu! and Harmonia to the pioneering work of icons like Genesis, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Van Halen, and Pink Floyd, to the candy-colored sounds of italo disco and the smoky corridors of dark danse.
The group released two CD-Rs (a self-titled full-length, and a follow-up EP, Twilight Sentinel, both compiled on the VCO release The Zombi Anthology and issued separately on vinyl), attracting the attention of Relapse, who signed ZOMBI in 2004. Extensive touring before and after the release of their first two Relapse full-lengths (2004’s Cosmos and 2006’s Surface To Air) found ZOMBI embarking on nationwide dates alongside artists like The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Fucking Champs, Guapo, Isis, Trans Am, Maserati, and Don Caballero. During this time, ZOMBI was also commissioned to record original soundtracks of their own, first for filmmaker Adam Wingard’s 2003 debut feature Home Sick, and then again for Nick Palumbo’s ToeTag-anchored slasher Murder-Set-Pieces (2004).
As touring activity slowed down, ZOMBI’s musical horizons broadened in scope, both in the extreme sides of their 2009 album Spirit Animal and in 2011’s Escape Velocity, their most synth- heavy work to date (and possibly the only Relapse release to ever feature a progressive house track). As the group looked beyond the methodologies of horror-influenced prog/synthscapes (a field which was becoming more and more crowded with new participants and fans in each successive year), the ambitions of Moore and Paterra grew as well, and the two embarked on their own projects.
2013 saw all of ZOMBI’s efforts come to fruition when they were asked to open the inaugural U.S. touring dates for Italian legends Goblin. For the first live ZOMBI dates since 2007, the two dusted off their gear and exploded into action, raising the spirits of all in attendance. Goblin then upped the ante by inviting Moore to perform as part of their group as a synth player on additional dates, and both bands were both invited to play at 2015’s Roadburn festival. These instances contributed directly to the creation of ZOMBI’s latest full-length, Shape Shift. The album was self-produced by the band and recorded at Machine Age Studios in Pittsburgh, and Steve Moore’s private studio in central New York. Moore commented on the new material: “It’s a rock record – think of it as a follow-up to Surface To Air. There are no techno jams or symphonic prog fantasies. No solo track interludes. It’s dark and heavy. Live drums on every song and lots of bass guitar. We have officially moved from ‘studio project’ mode back into ‘live band’ mode.”
