The Eleven is a french alternative rock\/metal band that is active for some 9 years. Lucas Biela (LB) interviewed them for ISKC Radio Group.<\/p>\n[Olivier (OLIV) \u2013 drummer]\n[Julien (Ju) \u2013 bassist]\n

 <\/p>\n

1\/ LB: The Eleven just released their second album, Endless, but the band is active for nearly 9 years on french alternative scene, and even longer if we add the time under the name Pure. Could you tell us more about the foundations of the band, and especially the origin of the name, which is quite original.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV]<\/strong> The project was initially the idea of Enzo, founder of the band Pure<\/strong>.
\nAfter several line-up changes, Enzo wanted to stand on solid ground with a strong team and a firm style.
\nAfter Guillaume was hired on guitar, Fred on bass guitar, and Olivier on drums, the band was finally complete, and once several compositions were available, a first album was released (Grunge Dundee), then after the recent hire of Julien (a year and a half ago) the \u00ab\u00a0Alternative Rock \u00bb style took shape naturally<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

2\/ LB: Your debut album had a length of 32 mn, the new one has a similar length. Why this limit in the length of your albums: is it to keep only your best compositions? Is it to fix melodies faster in your audience\u2019s mind?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>Very good question, both albums were done in times when the line-up was already finalized, and the compositions were strong.
\nAfter Grunge Dundee<\/strong> with Fred, we planned to work on a longer album, but COVID, + the departure of Fred, couldn\u2019t make it possible.
\nNow that Endless<\/strong> is released with Julien, we plan the same and we will work on a longer album, where we will take the time to express ourselves.<\/p>\n

[Ju]<\/strong> In addition to Oliv\u2019s answer, there was indeed a selection of tracks.
\nWe decided to release only the ones that seemed the strongest to us.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

3\/ LB: You are together as The Eleven for nearly 10 years, but it\u2019s only now thanks to my friend Luka of the band Barrakuda that I learn about your music, while I follow anything new in rock and metal through my review and radio programming activities: don\u2019t you think there\u2019s a big hole in the french media racket?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>Regarding The Eleven, after Grunge Dandee, we lacked clearly the organization and rigour needed to get more fame and to share our music.
\nYou know us now, and you could see that we improved a lot.<\/p>\n

[Ju] <\/strong>Regarding french scene in general, it is already very rich and big. It\u2019s actually a very good thing. Make a name is not easy, but Oliv and me have taken care of this, and we find solutions. You could already read articles and reviews (such as the one in Rock Hard) and our webradio interviews.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

4\/ LB : How did you choose the band\u2019s musical style: is it born from a common passion for grunge\/alternative sounds\u00a0? Do you plan to add other sounds in the future (I have in mind the electro-blues developments on \u00ab\u00a0Dark Rain\u00a0\u00bb and the indie-pop choir on \u00ab\u00a0Don’t Give It Up\u00a0\u00bb), or do you think that only time will tell?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>As stated previously, Enzo initiated the project (in terms of musical creation).
\nWith regard to the above, the style followed naturally Enzo\u2019s influences, i.e. NIN, Deftones, Soundgarden, etc \u2026<\/p>\n

I think the \u00ab\u00a0Alternative Rock \u00bb side took shape through the contribution of other members of the band, and the bond between each member\u2019s influences.<\/p>\n

As to the style of Endless<\/strong>\u2019 tracks and other tracks to come, we don\u2019t limit ourselves, that\u2019s the big asset of a self-produced band: no one to tell which line to follow, as long as we like tracks and they don\u2019t follow (in quotation marks) the paths trodden on our past compositions, we go for it!<\/p>\n

[Ju] <\/strong>And believe me, this causes a lot of selective removal!<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

5\/ LB\u00a0: When you perform on the different stages of France, how does the audience react? What about local press?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>Since the official release on 11th<\/sup> of January, there were only rave and positive reviews.
\nMany people are surprised when they learn we are a french band, everyone expects (for this musical style) a foreign or American band, and here, it\u2019s just Parisians but with a lot to tell.<\/p>\n

Being labeled \u00ab Alternative\u00a0Rock \u00bb opens, much to our surprise, many doors, and most of all, a very warm welcome, as to a member of family that we didn\u2019t see for long, as an old memory that resurfaces!<\/p>\n

[Ju] <\/strong>So beautiful are his words… Joke aside, feedbacks are indeed very positive. We noticed more and more people come to see us, not only close relatives or regular attendees.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

6\/ LB: Do you have a good (web)radio coverage in France\u00a0? I ask because one of the webradios I manage, ISKC Hard Rock channel, just added to its regular playlist all 7 songs of your new album.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>Most of the FM radios in France play french music \/ Rap \/ Pop, we have a radio that plays rock music, but it remains quite difficult for small rock bands like us, and it\u2019s even worse for \u00ab\u00a0self produced\u00a0\u00bb bands.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, webradios are more and more numerous, and they give us at last the opportunity to have our music broadcast, as much as they allow \u00absmall\u00bb bands to express themselves.<\/p>\n

[Ju] <\/strong>I find it crazy how wide the gap is between webradios and FM radios. We really feel the former target music lovers, which is quite satisfying for us. Each time we stumble upon a new webradio, we are thrilled to discover new artists. It\u2019s one of our areas of work in order to get a wider audience.<\/p>\n

7\/ LB: Do you have fans abroad?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>Not for now, we are quite new to anything Community Management \/ social network and broadcast of our music, and in the end still young in the web realm, even french, so we don\u2019t even talk about worldwide scope \u2026. but we have still a lot to do!<\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s indeed among our work areas with Julien, with whom we care about all these communication actions.<\/p>\n

[Ju] <\/strong>In any case, with your help, ISKC Hard Rock channel,<\/strong> it\u2019s already a first step, and we thank you again!<\/p>\n

8\/ LB: Your new album showcases a true craftsmanship when it comes to voice, rhythms and melodies. How did you come to such level of excellence?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>First, thanks for this great compliment, you come back whenever you want to see us!<\/p>\n

In the band, the main feeling is that we have an album that captures the best of us, both on musical and human levels.<\/p>\n

We tried to be the most rigorous and professional possible at each step of the album, from composition, to mastering, through to mixing, etc \u2026<\/p>\n

One of the major assets in the band is that we have our own recording studio, which allows us to spend as much time as we want in recording our instruments and fine tuning mixing.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

9\/ LB: New album, new tour: for the matter, do venues welcome you with open arms or is it uphill battle to book venues?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>Since the release of our album, Julien worked hard acting as a booker to help us promote our new album.
\nWe play 1-2 gigs on average per month, we target venues of our Parisian network, then cities around Paris, then countries near France.<\/p>\n

With open arms? No, certainly not \u2026
\nFirst, because we are quite new to the musical world: today, no one really knows us, and no one expects to see us in the end.
\nAlso, Paris and Paris area are already full of young bands, self-produced or with a label..<\/p>\n

Therefore, we need to play the game well, show how we can be well organized, professional in our approach, in order to spread as much as possible our music.
\nHence, indeed it looks more like uphill battle, but as we are fighters, we are fine with it.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the internet, we can see how we work efficiently, optimize and spread our music as best as we can.<\/p>\n

[Ju] <\/strong>This goes with what we discussed previously, we also discover the more professional sides of music. As we wish to stay entirely autonomous, it was tough when we started but little by little we got the relevant contacts and gigs come easier.<\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>We are so happy to know that people like you, that radios like yours, allow us to express ourselves and to be able to share our music.<\/p>\n

1\/ LB: The Eleven vient de publier son deuxi\u00e8me album, Endless, mais le groupe \u00e9volue depuis pr\u00e8s de 9 ans sur la sc\u00e8ne alternative fran\u00e7aise, et m\u00eame plus si l’on compte les ann\u00e9es sous le nom de Pure. Pouvez-vous nous en dire plus sur la gen\u00e8se du groupe, notamment l’origine du nom, qui est assez originale.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV]<\/strong> Le projet est port\u00e9 initialement par Enzo, cr\u00e9ateur du groupe Pure<\/strong>.
\nApr\u00e8s plusieurs changements de Line-Up, Enzo \u00e0 voulu repartir sur de bonnes bases avec une \u00e9quipe solide et un style affirm\u00e9.
\nApr\u00e8s le recrutement de Guillaume \u00e0 la Guitare, Fred \u00e0 la basse et Olivier \u00e0 la batterie, l\u2019\u00e9quipe est enfin au complet, et apr\u00e8s plusieurs compos, un album (Grunge Dundee), et apr\u00e8s le recrutement r\u00e9cent de Julien (il y a 1 an \u00bd) le style \u00ab\u00a0Rock Alternatif\u00a0\u00bb c\u2019est dessin\u00e9 tout naturellement.<\/p>\n

2\/ LB: Votre premier album avait une dur\u00e9e de 32 mn, le nouvel album a une dur\u00e9e similaire. Pourquoi cette limitation dans la dur\u00e9e de vos albums\u00a0: est-ce pour ne garder que le meilleur\u00a0de vos compositions ? Est-ce pour imprimer plus rapidement les m\u00e9lodies dans la t\u00eate de vos auditeurs\u00a0?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>Tr\u00e8s bonne question, les deux albums ont \u00e9t\u00e9 fait dans des moments o\u00f9 le Line Up \u00e9tait enfin pr\u00eat et les compos efficaces
\nApr\u00e8s Grunge Dundee<\/strong> avec Fred, on aurait d\u00fb travailler sur un album plus long mais le COVID + d\u00e9part de Fred a fait que cela n\u2019\u00e9tait pas possible.
\nMaintenant qu\u2019Endless. <\/strong>est sorti avec Julien, nous allons refaire de m\u00eame et travailler sur un futur Opus plus long, o\u00f9 l\u2019on aura le temps de bien s\u2019exprimer.<\/p>\n

[Ju]<\/strong> Pour compl\u00e9ter les propos d\u2019Oliv, il y a tout de m\u00eame eu une s\u00e9lection des morceaux.
\nNous avons fait le choix de ne sortir que ceux qui nous paraissaient \u00eatre les plus aboutis.<\/p>\n

3\/ LB: Vous \u00eates ensemble sous le nom de The Eleven depuis pr\u00e8s de 10, mais c’est seulement maintenant par le biais de l’ami Luka du groupe Barrakuda que j’apprends votre existence, alors que je suis l’actualit\u00e9 du rock et du metal du fait de mes activit\u00e9s de chroniqueur et programmateur radio : ne trouvez-vous pas qu’il y a un tr\u00e8s gros trou dans la raquette m\u00e9diatique fran\u00e7aise\u00a0?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>Pour ce qui est de The Eleven, Apr\u00e8s Grunge Dandee, nous avons clairement manqu\u00e9 d\u2019organisation et de s\u00e9rieux pour faire en sorte de gagner en notori\u00e9t\u00e9 et faire en sorte de partager notre musique.
\nMaintenant que tu nous connais, tu as pu voir que nous nous sommes bien am\u00e9lior\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

[Ju] <\/strong>Pour ce qui est de la sc\u00e8ne Fran\u00e7aise au globale, elle est d\u00e9j\u00e0 tr\u00e8s riche et tr\u00e8s fournie. C\u2019est une tr\u00e8s bonne nouvelle d\u2019ailleurs. Se faire une place visible n\u2019est pas chose facile mais Oliv et moi avons pris les choses en mains \u00e0 ce sujet et nous y rem\u00e9dions. Tu as pu constater les articles et chronique (notamment dans Rock Hard) et nos Interview webradios.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

4\/ LB : Comment avez-vous choisi l’orientation musicale du groupe\u00a0: est-ce n\u00e9 d’une passion commune pour les sons grunge\/alternatifs\u00a0? Pensez-vous incorporer d’autres sons \u00e0 l’avenir (je pense notamment aux ouvertures \u00e9lectro-blues sur \u00ab\u00a0Dark Rain\u00a0\u00bb et au refrain indie-pop sur \u00ab\u00a0Don’t Give It Up\u00a0\u00bb), ou pensez-vous que seul l’avenir le dira\u00a0?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>Comme dit pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment, Enzo est \u00e0 l\u2019origine du projet (en termes de cr\u00e9ation musicale)
\nDe ce postulat, le style s\u2019est naturellement d\u00e9fini avec les influences d\u2019Enzo qui \u00e9taient NIN, Deftones, Soundgarden, etc \u2026<\/p>\n

Je pense que le c\u00f4t\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0Rock Alternatif\u00a0\u00bb s\u2019est dessin\u00e9 par l\u2019apport des autres membres du groupe et l\u2019alchimie des influences de chacun.<\/p>\n

Pour ce qui est du style des morceaux d\u2019Endless<\/strong> et des futurs \u00e0 venir, nous ne nous fixons aucune limite, avantage ind\u00e9niable d\u2019un groupe \u00ab\u00a0Auto-Prod\u00a0\u00bb personne ne d\u00e9cide pour nous de la direction artistique \u00e0 suivre, tant que les morceaux nous plaisent et sortent (entre guillemets) de l\u2019ordinaire par rapport \u00e0 notre pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes compos, on y va\u00a0!<\/p>\n

[Ju] <\/strong>et crois moi que \u00e7a donne lieu \u00e0 bcp d\u2019\u00e9cr\u00e9mage\u00a0!<\/p>\n

5\/ LB\u00a0: Lorsque vous vous produisez sur les diff\u00e9rentes sc\u00e8nes de France, quelle est la r\u00e9action du public ? Et la presse locale, qu’en pense-t-elle\u00a0?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>Depuis notre sortie officielle le 11 janvier dernier, les \u00e9chos n\u2019ont \u00e9t\u00e9 qu\u2019\u00e9logieux et encourageants.
\nBeaucoup de personnes sont surprises quand elles apprennent que l\u2019on est un groupe Fran\u00e7ais, tout le monde s\u2019attend (pour ce style de musique) \u00e0 un groupe \u00e9tranger ou Am\u00e9ricain, et non, ce sont de simples parisiens mais avec beaucoup de choses \u00e0 raconter.<\/p>\n

Le fait justement que l\u2019on soit dans la case \u00ab\u00a0Rock Alternatif\u00a0\u00bb nous ouvre \u00e0 notre grande surprise, beaucoup de portes et surtout un accueil tr\u00e8s chaleurs, comme \u00e0 une personne de la famille que l\u2019on n\u2019a pas vu depuis longtemps tel un vieux souvenir raviv\u00e9\u00a0!<\/p>\n

[Ju] <\/strong>c\u2019est beau quand il parle… Blague \u00e0 part les retours sont effectivement tr\u00e8s positifs. Nous avons remarqu\u00e9 que de plus en plus de monde vient nous d\u00e9couvrir et plus seulement les proches ou habitu\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

6\/ LB: Avez-vous une bonne couverture (web)radiophonique en France\u00a0? Je pose la question car une des webradios dont j’ai la responsabilit\u00e9, ISKC Hard Rock channel, vient d’ajouter \u00e0 sa playlist r\u00e9guli\u00e8re les 7 morceaux de votre nouvel album.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>La majorit\u00e9 des radios \u00ab\u00a0hertziennes\u00a0\u00bb en France diffusent de la musique fran\u00e7aise \/ Rap \/ Pop, nous avons une radio qui diffuse du rock mais cela reste assez difficile pour des petits groupes de rock comme nous, et encore plus pour groupes \u00ab\u00a0auto-produits\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Heureusement les Webradios se propagent de plus et nous donnent enfin la chance de pouvoir diffuser notre musique et de donner \u00e0 de \u00ab\u00a0petits\u00a0\u00bb groupes la possibilit\u00e9 de s\u2019exprimer.<\/p>\n

[Ju] <\/strong>C\u2019est d\u2019ailleurs fou le d\u00e9calage entre les webradios et les radios hertziennes. On a vraiment l\u2019impression qu\u2019il y en a une qui cible vraiment les passionn\u00e9s de musique et autant te dire que \u00e7a nous convient parfaitement. A chaque fois que l\u2019on d\u00e9couvre une webradios on y d\u00e9couvre de nouveaux artistes et c\u2019est kiffant. C\u2019est un de nos axes de travail pour se faire connaitre.<\/p>\n

7\/ LB: Avez-vous des fans \u00e0 l’\u00e9tranger\u00a0?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>Pas pour le moment, pour tous ce qui est Community Management \/ r\u00e9seaux sociaux et diffusion de notre musique, nous sommes assez nouveaux et finalement jeunes sur la sph\u00e8re du WEB, et surtout Fran\u00e7aise, alors l\u2019\u00e9tranger \u2026. Mais on a encore de quoi faire\u00a0!<\/p>\n

Mais \u00e7a fait en effet parti de nos axes de travail avec Julien, avec qui on s\u2019occupe \u00e9troitement de toutes ces actions de communications.<\/p>\n

[Ju] <\/strong>En tout cas avec ton intervention ISKC Hard Rock channel<\/strong> c\u2019est d\u00e9j\u00e0 un premier step, et encore merci \u00e0 toi\u00a0!<\/p>\n

8\/ LB: Votre nouvel album pr\u00e9sente un v\u00e9ritable travail d’orf\u00e8vre sur la voix, les rythmiques et les m\u00e9lodies. Comment \u00eates-vous parvenu \u00e0 un tel niveau d’excellence ?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>D\u00e9j\u00e0, merci pour ce magnifique compliment, tu reviens quand tu veux nous voir\u00a0!<\/p>\n

En interne dans le groupe, on a surtout l\u2019impression d\u2019avoir un album refl\u00e9tant le meilleur de nous-m\u00eame, musicalement comme humainement.<\/p>\n

On a essay\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre le plus exigeant et consciencieux possible pour chaque \u00e9tape de cet album, de la composition, au Mastering, en passant par le mixage, etc \u2026<\/p>\n

Un de nos plus gros avantage dans le groupe, est d\u2019avoir en notre possession notre propre studio d\u2019enregistrement, ce qui fait que l\u2019on est compl\u00e8tement autonome dans le temps que l\u2019on peut passer \u00e0 enregistrer nos instruments et peaufiner le mixage.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

9\/ LB: Qui dit nouvel album dit tourn\u00e9e\u00a0: de ce c\u00f4t\u00e9-l\u00e0, est-ce que les salles de concert vous accueillent les bras ouverts ou est-ce le parcours du combattant pour r\u00e9server des salles\u00a0?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[OLIV] <\/strong>Depuis notre r\u00e9cente sortie, Julien a travaill\u00e9 d\u2019arrachepied \u00e0 jouer le r\u00f4le de booker pour nous aider \u00e0 d\u00e9fendre notre r\u00e9cent Opus.
\nOn enchaine 1 \u00e0 2 concerts par mois, nous visons les salles de notre r\u00e9seau Parisien, puis des villes gravitant autour de Paris, puis des pays proches France.<\/p>\n

A bras ouverts\u00a0? non tout de m\u00eame pas \u2026
\nD\u00e9j\u00e0 parce que nous sommes finalement r\u00e9cents dans la sph\u00e8re musicale, aujourd\u2019hui, personne ne nous connait vraiment, et personne ne nous attends finalement.
\nEt puis du fait, que Paris + la r\u00e9gion parisienne est d\u00e9j\u00e0 bien satur\u00e9e de jeunes groupes, groupes auto-prod et groupes lab\u00e9lis\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Il faut donc que l\u2019on arrive \u00e0 tirer notre \u00e9pingle du jeu, montrer \u00e0 quel point nous pouvons \u00eatre organis\u00e9s, pros dans notre d\u00e9marche pour ainsi propager le plus possible notre musique.
\nDonc en effet, plus le parcours du combattant, mais comme nous sommes des battants, \u00e7a nous va bien finalement.<\/p>\n

Grace au Web nous pouvons voir comment travailler de mani\u00e8re efficace, optimiser et diffuser notre musique le mieux possible.<\/p>\n

[Ju] <\/strong>\u00e7a rejoint ce dont on parlait plus t\u00f4t, on d\u00e9couvre aussi l\u2019aspect plus pro de la musique. Comme on souhaite rester autonomes jusqu\u2019au bout, on a gal\u00e9r\u00e9 un peu au d\u00e9but mais on commence \u00e0 avoir les bons contacts et les dates commencent \u00e0 venir de plus en plus facilement.<\/p>\n

10\/ LB: Souhaitez-vous ajouter quoi que ce soit \u00e0 cet entretien ?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
